Sensorium Virtual Fall Mixer

Thursday, October 22, 2020

5:00-7:00pm

RSVP to sensinfo@yorku.ca

We invite all members of the Sensorium and AMPD community to join us for our Virtual Fall Mixer Thursday, October 22 from 5-7pm!

The event is an opportunity for new and existing community members to connect and share ongoing work/initiatives. The evening will begin with a short introduction and update on centre activities before moving into casual breakout conversations.

Over the last few months,  we have been organizing and building community through our digital extensions.  How have the new realities and struggles of our digital environment influenced creative processes and the sharing of ideas?  How does the digital medium support or deny intimacy and community?  What counts as productivity and labor in today’s world? These will serve as casual prompts throughout the event as members meet, mingle and network.

In addition to the classic Zoom format, we will also be simultaneously hosting a virtual Mozilla hubs space where participants can enter into a virtual space and say hello to fellow researcher avatars. For more info on mozilla hubs – see HERE.

PostScript: A Series on Accessibility, Disability, and Digital Publishing

PostScript is an online series on accessibility, disability, and digital publishing, hosted by Public Access. It will connect artists, researchers, writers, academics, students, publishers, and distributors from around the world who work in publishing and have a stake in, focus on, or interest in issues related to disability and accessibility. By gathering and fostering international connections, Public Access will encourage the development of networks and knowledge sharing.

The name of our event, “PostScript,” simultaneously references a page description language used in publishing applications, the historical problem of seeing accessibility as an “add-on” or afterthought, and the notion that we have increasing opportunities to expand upon the print medium into new modes of accessibility in the digital.

For PostScript, “publishing” includes traditional and nontraditional forms of publishing, emerging forms of storytelling (such as VR/AR/XR), and gaming.

The sessions will be divided into four main categories:

  • Publishing (topics related to publishing professionals);
  • Artists and Writers (topics relating to disabled artists and writers);
  • Contexts (broader contextual discussions); and
  • Best Practices (practical demos and how-to’s).

We have commissioned four artists to create work on the broad themes of accessibility, disability, and digital publishing through an open call in partnership with Tangled Arts + Disability. Click here to visit Tangled Arts + Disability’s website: https://tangledarts.org
