Skawennati and Jason Edward Lewis write, make art, invent technologies, and run workshops that teach Indigenous youth how to make video games and machinima (among other things). Their individual and collaborative works have been distributed and celebrated online, in gallery exhibitions, public installations, and at media and Indigenous arts festivals across Canada and internationally. Critical to their creative practice is the idea that their work in the virtual world helps to enact positive change in the real world.

In addition to their creative practice, Jason and Skawennati are co-directors of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace (AbTeC). AbTeC is an Aboriginally determined research-creation network of artists, academics, and technologists that seek to ensure Indigenous presence in online platforms and environments, video games, and virtual worlds that comprise cyberspace. AbTeC projects include Skins Workshops on Aboriginal Storytelling and Video Game Design, and the Initiative for Indigenous Futures. What futures we do we want to imagine, and then create, for our Aboriginal communities?

This artist talk is free and open to the public – but we need you to let us know you’re coming! There will be a reception in the CIBC Lobby following the talk.

Digitally Engaged Learning Conference – DEL 2018

We’re excited to announce that DEL 2018 will be hosted by AMPD at York University from Sept 20-22, 2018. Digitally Engaged Learning (DEL) is an international conference exploring and evolving digitally engaged teaching and learning in art and design Higher Education.

DEL 2018 SCHEDULE

DEL is a place for creative and critical making, where you will find objects, artefacts, experimental technologies and performances alongside presentations and workshops. We welcome educators, researchers, technicians, instructional designers, artists, makers, art historians, digital humanities scholars, and others across all creative disciplines.

The edge effect is an ecological concept that describes biological interactions happening on the boundaries of two overlapping ecosystems. Species from both ecosystems live alongside one another, as well as unique species that aren’t found in either. The unique species are specially adapted to the conditions of the transition zone between the two edges. Many species seek out edges because they offer simultaneous access to multiple environments, and a greater richness in habitat. In art and design, working at the “edges” of ideas or practices, often in spaces between disciplines, ways of knowing and bodies of knowledge, can be very fruitful. It can provide new insights, allow us to challenge conventions, and rethink our engagement with the world around us.

Amnon Buchbinder Film Retrospective March 22 and 29

In celebration of his recent promotion from Associate Professor to Professor, The Department of Cinema & Media Arts presents a 2 day Amnon Buchbinder retrospective featuring 7 of his films and a workshop by  Geneviève Appleton exploring Buchbinder’s innovative interactive documentary project Biology of Story.

Amnon Buchbinder started teaching at  York University in 1995 and received a tenure stream appointment in 1996. He is a former Chair of the department and has played an instrumental role in developing the department’s curriculum in production and screenwriting. An active filmmaker, screenwriter and author, his credits include directing two theatrically-released feature films: Genie award winning The Fishing Trip (1998), made in collaboration with his students and distributed by Mongrel Media, and Whole New Thing (2005) which screened at more than 100 international film festivals, winning a dozen best-film awards. Working in the Canadian film and television industry, Buchbinder has written numerous screenplays and served as story editor on over a hundred feature film projects in funded development. His book The Way of the Screenwriter (House of Anansi Press, 2005), which reinterprets the craft from both a philosophical and practical point of view, has been widely acclaimed by working screenwriters and he has taught professional screenwriting workshops in a dozen countries. Buchbinder has also served as a curator and film programmer for several organizations including the Vancouver International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

Biology of Story illustrates Buchbinder’s theory of story and anti-story in art and life. It was undertaken as research-creation and funded with a major SSHRC Insight grant, launching at SXSW-Interactive in 2016 with over 70 hours of material (see news story). It is now a highlight of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design’s eLearning courses.

Disruptive Design and Digital Fabrication Exhibition

The Disruptive Design and Digital Fabrication exhibition explores the relationship between digital fabrication processes and social design that increasingly revolve around prototyping and iterative testing.  Digital tools are today ubiquitous in academic and community settings, yet engaging with these goes beyond any particular technologically enhanced capacity.  In what Katherine Hayles calls a ‘Regime of Computation’, works today increasingly involve a co-evolution of life and mind, individual and society.  The ‘disruptive’ technologies that will be introduced reflect on the infrastructural machinic processes that are pervasive in digital culture today, and reveal biases and stereotypes in their design through alternative networking of edge sensing, assistive technologies, Google Homes, wikiLeaks, artscience visualizations and more. 
 
Through the symposium, we hope to create an opportunity for artists and theorists to engage in a discussion of critical making, accountability and experiential learning through their works and research projects.  The exhibition provides an experiential context to their works and for visitors to gain experience into their working processes.

Join us for this lunchtime talk about the evolution of “Hollywood Old and New”, a fully online class that offers students an understanding of Hollywood film genres from a historical and social perspective. In this talk, the presenters will discuss their pedagogical strategies for the new course redesign to facilitate student engagement in a large format class. This course is offered by the Department Cinema and Media Arts in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. 

Gillian Helfield lectures at York University, in Cinema and Media Studies in AMPD, Humanities in LAPS, and Canadian Studies at Glendon College. Though she has specialized in Canadian and Quebec Cinemas, other areas of academic interest include Genre Studies, Cultural Studies, Women’s Cinema, National Cinemas, Diasporic and Exilic Cinemas, Middle Eastern Cinemas, and Rural Cinemas. In 2006, her book Representing the Rural: Space Place and Identity, in Films About the Land, was published by Wayne State University Press.

In collaboration with AMPD, Gillian has developed and redesigned two large-enrolment online film courses, which have earned recognition from international eLearning associations (IELA) and the Teaching Commons at York University (York’s nomination for the STLHE Brightspace /D2L Innovation Award). In 2017, she received the AMPD eLearning Teaching Award.

Dan Becker is the Educational Designer and Developer for the Faculty of Education. He works extensively with instructors to operationalize educational theory and current research within courses that utilize technology. Dan develops learning experiences that engage students, build communities of inquiry and employ meaningful assessment strategies, while avoiding excessive effort on the part of the instructor. His approach of simplicity and depth has produced a variety of courses that are enjoyed by instructors and students alike.
