Visual Art Speaker Series: Shelley Adler

Toronto based artist, Shelley Adler’s paintings are commanding in their painterly exuberance and stunning range of color. Using fragments of contemporary life, Adler’s psychological portraits explore gender and identity, creating a balance between interior and exterior worlds. From early cave painting to the Mona Lisa and Andy Warhol portraiture is a formidable artistic tradition. Adler’s paintings of people’s faces are not portraits in the strict sense of the word in that portraits are formulated primarily as likenesses of the sitter. In Adler’s painting, the face is a springboard to a luminous and freeform tableau. They are less about the sitter than the internal processes of the artist and her intense curiosity about people, about the ways of looking, and about the act of painting. These considerations are delicately balanced to reflect a deep humanism. With generous brushstrokes and vibrant planes of light, Adler forms the face into an elemental and iconic essence. Each painting is endowed with a particular, individual energy through color and composition. Color and its link to emotion is a primary concern and although Adler employs eccentric, non-naturalistic color, the faces have a very real quality. Like David Hockney, Adler often paints people she knows. For Hockney, capturing a subject’s likeness, and especially his or her personality, can only be properly done with the human touch, or as he says, “it has to be directed through my heart to my eye to my hand.”
Shelley Adler has exhibited throughout Canada. She has had solo shows at Nicholas Metivier Gallery, Toronto (2006, 2009), Andrea Meislin (2008) and has participated in group exhibitions in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, including Sarah Myerscough Fine Art, London (2008). Adler received her MFA from Boston University in 1987. She graduated from York University in Toronto in 1983 and attended Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland in 1982.

Growth & Decay, a mixed media exhibition by Kathryn Ferragina and Olivia Williams

Burgeon (2017, 30”x30”, Acrylic on panel) Olivia WilliamsGrowth & Decay highlights the intermingling of humans and nature. Third year visual art students Kathryn Ferragina and Olivia Williams use a variety of mediums including drawing, sculpture and serigraph, among others to show how humans affect and influence the environment.

“Humans have an inherent connection to the earth through the things we create and leave there, and through the show we seek to explore this idea. Our work highlights nature, man made objects, and the combination of the two. A lot of  the imagery we use reflects scraps, natural forms, and material and environmental things “decaying”. We want to look deeper into this connection between the growth of natural forms and how they connect to decaying, while also looking at the certain mechanical aspects and its influence on the nature itself.”

Visual Art Speaker Series: Jérôme Havre

Originally from France, Jérôme Havre is a Toronto based artist inspired by the production of natural history dioramas in museums and zoos. He develops in his creations reflexive spaces through immersive
processes. He looks for ways to do this through presentation, the creation of situations, or setting the stage with his sculptures and inviting the public to take part “in the show.”
Havre’s work interrogates issues of identity, territory and community through the representation of nature. That is, the manner in which it is presented
and yet can be more readily perceived through our cultural filters. According to Havre, “nature is deliberately altered in order to deceive us and keep order.” Havre completed his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During his time at the School of Fine Arts he was awarded three scholarships that enabled him to pursue  different art practices: silk printing techniques in New York (Cooper Union), printing techniques in Barcelona (Bellas Artes) and painting and video in Berlin (Universität der Künste Berlin – HDK) in the workshop of Marwan Kassab Bashi. Havre uses textiles, sculpture, digital prints, photographic images, murals, sound recording, and videos to create scenographic installations. For him, the use of a technological process is not only to accomplish a specific task, but a necessary form of expression itself.

Visual Art Speaker Series: Robyn Zolnai

Robyn Zolnai of the Stephen Bulger Gallery, offers her first-hand expertise in the art market for those pursuing a career as an artist. She will share stories and examples from successful emerging and established artists about their practices, as well as answer questions on the fundamentals when navigating the art market. The lecture will cover a variety of topics ranging from building a portfolio, understanding gallery structures, and setting professional goals.

Robyn Zolnai completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at York University in 2008. From 2010 to 2012 she attended Ryerson University where she obtained a Master of Arts in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management. Zolnai is currently the Sales Manager & Communications Officer at the Stephen Bulger Gallery, and a guest lecturer on collecting photography and career development for emerging artists at various high schools, colleges, and universities in Ontario.

Visual Art Speaker Series: Julia Dault

Julia DaultToronto-based artist Julia Dault has been the subject of solo exhibitions at 3:e Våningen, Gothenburg, Sweden; the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; and The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto. Her paintings and sculptures were featured in the New Museum’s triennial and the Marrakesh and Gwangju Biennales as well as group exhibitions at such institutions as Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam; the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston; and the Pérez Art Museum, Miami, and are in the permanent collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, among others. Dault’s work will be included in “Hinge Picture, Memory Images” at the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans in spring 2019.
She is represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery New York; Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran, Montreal; and China Art Objects, Los Angeles.

When I Grow Up …, mixed media exhibition by Courtney Fairweather

Sweet Dreams uses illustrations by such people as Mabel Lucie Attwell, Muriel Dawson, and Susan B. Pearse, applied to bedroom curtains.These images socialize little girls into acceptance of traditional gender roles whereby they clean house and are passive in the face of male violence. The second part of the exhibition, Doll House, is a metaphorical representation of what girls can expect, if they adhere to these gender roles. This mixed media exhibition also includes photographic material.

Woven, a raw canvas installation by Eszter Rosta

Eszter Rosta's Substance (a) - 2018Fifth year Visual Art student Eszter Rosta’s solo show Woven, explores materiality, physicality, and objecthood in a number of large-scale raw canvas works.

“I want to play with the prominence of the shape through the materials in question and natural pigmentations such as teas, coffee grounds, plants, etc. Furthermore, I also intend to represent the objecthood of the canvas, by showing them for the canvas that it is – the actual fabrication of the material, the complexity of its weaving, and its natural reference to plants, through processes of manipulation and human imprint.

Just the Wind, a mixed-media exhibition by Ellen Soule and Liv Paul

Liv Paul - Portrait of Ellen, ink drawing Third year Visual Art students Ellen Soule and Liv Paul team up to create and present Just the Wind, a mixed-media exhibition that invites viewers to ask questions about the way they experience fear and trauma.

“It is a well-known expression that most people have encountered when hearing a strange noise that it was “just the wind” rather than an intruder – human, or spectral. Our joint exhibition focuses on the experience of our fears or traumas and how we process them. We want people to connect with a moment they remember hearing the phrase so that they immediately recognize their connection to the works. We hope that people will see their own fears represented in the visualizations of our personal fears, which are common in many people but create different reactions individually. ”

Visual Art Speaker Series: Stephen Horne

Stephen Horne has published in a number of periodicals (Third Text, Parachute, Art Press, Flash Art, Canadian Art, C Magazine, ArtAsiaPacific, and Fuse), catalogues (including the recent National Gallery of Canada catalogue for the exhibition Caught In The Act) and anthologies in English, French and German. He edited the anthology Fiction, or Other Accounts of Photography (Dazibao, Montreal, 2000). A book of his essays, Abandon Building: Selected Writings on Art, was published in 2007  (Press Eleven, Montreal). Horne has organized exhibitions in Canada, France and Germany, most recently Know-How or No-How at Galerie der HBKsaar, Saarbruken. He was Professor in Media Arts at NSCAD University from 1979 to 2005, and also taught at Concordia University in the MFA Seminars Program from 1992 – 2000. He currently lives in Montreal and is researching the topics of performativity and public space in the context of media.

X – a collaborative exhibition by Kristen Elizabeth Donoghue-Stanford and Rebecca Garcia Echeverria

X is a collaborative exhibition by  Kristen Elizabeth Donoghue-Stanford and Rebecca Garcia Echeverria focused on the theme of femininity and the subversion of the stereotypes that limit it.

Through the exploration of their different and similar experiences, Donoghue-Stanford and Garcia propose to create an abstracted feminine environment that calls upon a shifting perspective of femininity and redefining what it means to exist in the everyday as a woman. The exhibition will exist as a lament to the experiences of women, but also as an expression of gratitude.

The State of Not Knowing is an exhibition works on paper by Ernesto Hidalgo (print media) and Deanna Gisborne (painting & drawing).

Artist statement: Ultimately, a search for our complicated identities is at the heart of our work, whether this is manifested by obscuring the body, multiplying form, collapsing into a writhing vortex or creating dream-like worlds where animals and humans intersect. We try to reconcile contradictions in ourselves, made possible through the unbounded language of art. All of this probing of the self-conscious mind is expressed in bodies, trying from all angles to reach that same conclusion and achieve resolution: Who am I, and how can I grasp this ever-evolving self?  This question is, of course, unanswerable, but we continue this cycle indefinitely, because we are human, and we are curious.

Lifelines (Hilda) – solo sculpture and time based art show by Kristen Elizabeth Donoghue-Stanford

Lifelines (Hilda) is a solo sculpture and time based art installation by Kristen Elizabeth Donoghue-Stanford focused on the theme of lamentation and mourning of someone who is no longer present.

Artist statement: The exhibition will focus around ideas of life, death, loss, and remembrance, interplaying with one another. 87 knitted tubes in neutral colours will be suspended within the gallery space, arranged to create guided pathways and a knitted canvass for video projection.

The installation will be curated in order to showcase a metaphorical image of the lifelines of a particular life; that of a woman named Hilda, whom the footage collected belonged to. 87 knitted tubes will be used within the installation showcasing the number of years Hilda lived until she passed away on January 6th, 2019. The video shows Hilda and her family throughout several years of their lives and will be played on loop throughout the exhibition. A slight distortion will be used in order to hide or blur certain images within the video frame, as well as the projection onto the knitwork will add its own distortion. This is meant to symbolize the memories we don’t always get to keep with us, even when someone has left us.  As one of Hilda’s favourite pastimes and a skill that she passed onto the next generation of her family, the knitwork could not more perfectly summarize the complicated, yet beautiful framework of a life. In this installation we experience the feelings of remembrance and loss and face the concepts of life and death as we witness the lifelines of somebody who is no longer with us through the process of lamenting.  It opens the possibility for reflection and the ability to express gratitude towards such a life.

Belly Dance as Mindful Movement for Stress Reduction

Belly Dance as Mindful Movement for Stress Reduction

This movement-based workshop utilizes belly dance vocabulary designed for self-soothing. Learn movements that support the reduction of stress and anxiety symptoms. Participants will leave with applications on how stress responses can be experiences on a spectrum from hyper-arousal (feelings of overstimulation) to hypo-arousal (feelings associated with low-energy or burnout). Belly dance used as mindfulness offers gentle wavey movement designed to down-regulate physical stress responses. This workshop also combines more energizing vocabulary through shimmying and shaking as well as core engagement to support up-regulation of the nervous system, based on internal rhythm and percussion.

 

About the Facilitator :

Shaila is completing her Masters in Dance at York University. She concurrently training as a Dance Movement Therapist through the National Centre for Dance Therapy in Montreal. Her work focuses on belly dance practices that use sensuality as a healing tool within dance interventions. Her movement offerings look at building resiliency, decoupling stress responses and promoting body positivity. Shaila provides a unique framework that maps belly dance vocabulary for nervous-system regulation. Shaila has been an active member of the Toronto belly dancing community for over a decade, both as a performer and instructor. She currently works as a Health Educator and Training Specialist and enjoys offering students training on mental health and well-being.
