An immersive, spatial audio-haptic concert in total darkness for the Winter Solstice!

This concert will feature existing pieces by invited composer Darren Copeland and Doug Van Nort that are re-imagined for the 28.2 audio and 56-channel haptic floor of the DisPerSion Lab. It will also include a new piece by lab member Rory Hoy created for this event.

Copeland’s piece will feature a small amount of light in order to see his performative gesture-based spatializations sound. Van Nort’s piece, originally composed in 2012, will be the first full use of the haptic floor that he has created over the past few years. Hoy’s piece will be a new construction created in the space leading up to the event.

About the guest composer:
Darren Copeland is a Canadian sound artist who has been active since 1985 and lives in the country outside the village of South River (Ontario). His work encompasses multichannel spatialization for live performance, fixed media composition, soundscape composition, radio art and sound installations.

His fixed-media compositions have explored both abstract and referential sound materials. Many of these works are released on the empreintes DIGITALes label and have received mentions from Vancouver New Music, Phonurgia Nova, Luigi Russolo, and other competitions.and lighting.

Disruptive Design and Digital Fabrication Exhibition

The Disruptive Design and Digital Fabrication exhibition explores the relationship between digital fabrication processes and social design that increasingly revolve around prototyping and iterative testing.  Digital tools are today ubiquitous in academic and community settings, yet engaging with these goes beyond any particular technologically enhanced capacity.  In what Katherine Hayles calls a ‘Regime of Computation’, works today increasingly involve a co-evolution of life and mind, individual and society.  The ‘disruptive’ technologies that will be introduced reflect on the infrastructural machinic processes that are pervasive in digital culture today, and reveal biases and stereotypes in their design through alternative networking of edge sensing, assistive technologies, Google Homes, wikiLeaks, artscience visualizations and more. 
 
Through the symposium, we hope to create an opportunity for artists and theorists to engage in a discussion of critical making, accountability and experiential learning through their works and research projects.  The exhibition provides an experiential context to their works and for visitors to gain experience into their working processes.

Please join us for our next Winter Lunchtime Seminar Series featuring Cinema and Media Arts PhD Candidate and Sensorium Graduate Research Associate, Alison Humphrey!

Alison Humphrey plays with story across drama, digital media, and education. As a Vanier Scholar in Cinema and Media Arts at York University, her research-creation doctoral dissertation explores how a participatory science fiction storyworld, Shadowpox, can help young people build scientific, civic and media literacy by exploring immunization and vaccine hesitancy through a superhero metaphor.

The project’s first phase, full-body videogame, debuted during the 70th World Health Assembly in Geneva, where The Lancet called it “one of the most powerful and playful ways to illustrate both the individual and population-level implications of community immunity.” The second phase is a networked superhero narrative, The Cytokine Storm, co-created with young artists on three continents.

The third phase adapts this narrative into a Scalar-based online platform for a “courseplay”, a hybrid undergraduate seminar that weaves academic study with dramatic composition and digital production. Science & Fiction: Imagining Immunity in an Immersive Storyworld takes a new approach to the concept of experiential education: action refraction, where students use metaphoric world-building and digitally augmented role-play to explore one of the thorniest political dilemmas of public health: voluntary participation in the collective good.

The Wendy Michener Memorial Lecture presents Wafaa Bilal (Performing Change)

Wafaa Bilal will discuss specific bodies of work including Domestic Tension (aka Shoot an Iraqi), The Things I Could Tell…, and his most recent project 168:01, elaborating on the evolution of his work and reflecting on his personal experiences living in both the conflict zone of Iraq and the comfort zone of the United States. Bilal’s work explores both the trauma of conflicts and post-conflict relationships through social engagement.

His dynamic, participatory work blends technology and performance to engage viewers in dialogue and places him in the role of the artist as platform initiator, helping to shift and change the distribution channels in the media. The controversial aspects of his work spark deeper conversation and provoke passive viewers to take an active stance with regard to social justice and their own personal/political realities

Belly Dance as Mindful Movement for Stress Reduction

This movement-based workshop utilizes belly dance vocabulary designed for self-soothing. Learn movements that support the reduction of stress and anxiety symptoms. Participants will leave with applications on how stress responses can be experiences on a spectrum from hyper-arousal (feelings of overstimulation) to hypo-arousal (feelings associated with low-energy or burnout). Belly dance used as mindfulness offers gentle wavey movement designed to down-regulate physical stress responses. This workshop also combines more energizing vocabulary through shimmying and shaking as well as core engagement to support up-regulation of the nervous system, based on internal rhythm and percussion.

 

About the Facilitator :

Shaila is completing her Masters in Dance at York University. She concurrently training as a Dance Movement Therapist through the National Centre for Dance Therapy in Montreal. Her work focuses on belly dance practices that use sensuality as a healing tool within dance interventions. Her movement offerings look at building resiliency, decoupling stress responses and promoting body positivity. Shaila provides a unique framework that maps belly dance vocabulary for nervous-system regulation. Shaila has been an active member of the Toronto belly dancing community for over a decade, both as a performer and instructor. She currently works as a Health Educator and Training Specialist and enjoys offering students training on mental health and well-being.

Electro-Acoustic Orchestra @ Dispersion Relation X Continues!

Dispersion specializes in carving out a virtual space of community, allowing for remote connections of listening and sounding.

The Electro-Acoustic Orchestra (dir. Doug Van Nort) is an ensemble comprised of a mixture of acoustic and electronic performers. It is an emergent sonic organism that evolves through collective attention to all facets of sound, and soundpainting-based real-time composition.

The conducting language used with the group is based on Soundpainting, with modifications and additions by Van Nort for the electro-acoustic context. In the words of the language’s inventor: “The Soundpainter (the composer) standing in front (usually) of the group communicates a series of signs using hand and body gestures indicating specific and/or aleatoric material to be performed by the group. The Soundpainter develops the responses of the performers, moulding and shaping them into the composition then signs another series of gestures, a phrase, and continues in this process of composing the piece.”

The EAO functions as a year-round resident ensemble for the DisPerSion Lab, and also runs as an undergraduate and graduate course during the Fall terms. EAO integrates members from YorkU, the larger Toronto electroacoustic and improvising communities, and the international community of electro/acoustic improvisers via performances over the internet.

Please join us Wednesday, November 11 for the first event in the 2020-21 Sensorium Seminar Series, featuring filmmaker, producer, advocate and Associate Professor in Cinema Studies at York, Ingrid Veninger. Professor Veninger will discuss the project ONE(NINE)a nine-chapter anthology featuring the films of nine different women from around the world. Produced by pUNK films during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project brings together female led stories from South Africa, Germany, Spain, China, United States, and Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. To read more about the project please see the YFile article here 

The virtual seminar will include a presentation by Professor Veninger and collaborator Jorge de Oliveira who will discuss the newest phase of the project. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period moderated by Sensorium Director Joel Ong.

About the Presenters 

Ingrid Veninger  holds an MFA from York University and has been a full-time faculty member in the Department of Cinema and Media Arts since 2019.  

Born in Bratislava and raised in Canada, Ingrid has produced fifteen feature films with premieres at TIFF, Rotterdam, Locarno, Slamdance, Whistler, Rome, Hot Docs, Karlovy Vary, Busan and MoMA in New York. She has received retrospectives of her work at the Canadian Film Institute (Ottawa, Canada) and FEMCine (Santiago, Chile). She has been the recipient of the WIFTS International Visionary Award, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists EDA Award for ‘Best Director’, and the Jay Scott Prize presented by the Toronto Film Critics Association. A member of the Directors Guild of Canada and participant in the inaugural TIFF Studio, Berlinale Talents, and Rotterdam Producer’s Lab, Ingrid has been a mentor at the Canadian Film Centre and Screenwriter-in-Residence at the University of Toronto. 

An advocate for gender parity, Ingrid launched the pUNK Films Femmes Lab in 2014 to foster narrative feature films written and directed by Canadian women, sponsored by Academy Award winner Melissa Leo. Currently, she is working on a collaborative feature film and web-based project, created in context of the COVID-19 pandemic entitled -  ONE(NINE) – to premiere 2021. 

Jorge de Oliveira is a student lab assistant for the Public Visualization Lab. Born in Brazil and moved to Toronto in 2006 and has developed a love for technology and creative arts. Jorge graduated from Mechanical Engineering Technology at George Brown College and worked in the field of Mechanical testing and architectural drafting before joining York in 2018. Jorge de Oliveira is currently in his second year in the Digital Media program with specialization in Game Arts at York University. 

About the Sensorium Seminar Series 

The series aims to foster interconnectivity between faculty, graduate students, visiting scholars and artists within the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design. Initiated in January 2020, the series provides space for Sensorium community members to discuss ongoing research projects, ideas and initiativesThe casual, lunch time seminar series facilitates variety presentations, pitch sessions, topical discussions, invited speakers and external associations or organizations looking to interface with our community and share their work. Though we are currently unable to meet in the Sensorium Research Loft, we are excited to announce the series will be taking place virtually throughout the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.

Kite aka Suzanne Kite (http://kitekitekitekite.com/) is an Oglála Lakȟóta performance artist, visual artist, and composer raised in Southern California, with a BFA from CalArts in music composition, an MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery Graduate School, and is a PhD candidate at Concordia University. Kite’s scholarship and practice investigate contemporary Lakota ontologies through research-creation, computational media, and performance. Recently, Kite has been developing a body interface for movement performances, carbon fibre sculptures, immersive video and sound installations, as well as co-running the experimental electronic imprint, Unheard Records. Kite has also published in several journals and magazines, including in The Journal of Design and Science (MIT Press), where the award winning article, “Making Kin with Machines,” co-authored with Jason Lewis, Noelani Arista, and Archer Pechawis, was featured. Currently, she is a 2019 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar, a 2020 Tulsa Artist Fellow, and a 2020 Women at Sundance x Adobe Fellow.

Devin Ronneberg is a multidisciplinary artist of mixed Okinawan, Kanaka Maoli, and European heritage, works primarily in sound and sculpture. He received his BFA from California Institute of the Arts, Santa Clarita, California. Through sculpture, sound art, computational media, and design, his practice is currently concerned with emergent technologies and their unseen implications. He is an experimental aircraft designer with Berkut Engineering and co-runs the imprint Private Selection Records. He has recently exhibited at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts and received a Sundance Institute Nonfiction Storytelling grant through the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The year 2020 has seen the unfolding of a pandemic and a global response that is unprecedented in its scale and scope at any time in history. As artists, thinkers, and creative practitioners, this is an essential moment for us to engage the world and use our unique perspective to confront the urgent matters of our time. The computational approach to making provides us with a unique standpoint in this conversation where we bridge the domains of art, science, and technology to critically engage the world through a discourse on technology at its roots. By using code and signals as an expressive medium we can reimagine past, current, and future technologies, steering technological impact and influencing our mutual prosperity and collective futures.It is in this spirit that Digital Media and the Department of Computational Arts at York University presents our December 2020 Online exhibition: Invisibility :: Complexity :: Resistance :: Intentionality. As part of this exhibition, we will be hosting a series of events that include an exhibition launch, guest speakers, a workshop, and performances from students and faculty.

This event is part of the Regeneration: All Our Relations series organized through Sensorium: The Centre for Digital Art and Technology and is supported by the Indigeneity in Teaching and Learning Fund at York University
